THE FAMOUS BAHT BUS

Baht bus’s (the Thai name is spoken as SongTal) are the local public taxi service that drive around the “Pattaya Beach Rd and 2nd Rd circuit”, ferrying passenger on short rides for a fee of 10 baht per person.

The usually consist of a ute with a open cab on the back which can hold up to 10 people and are the most convenient method of travelling short distances of 1-2 km or so.

THE 6 CIRCUITS

There are 6 main circuits around Pattaya in which the Baht buses mostly operate –

  • BEACH RD AND 2ND RD CIRCUIT
  • NORTH PATTAYA TO NA-KLUEA CIRCUIT
  • NORTH PATTAYA TO SUKHUMVIT RD CIRCUIT
  • CENTRAL PATTAYA RD TO SUKHUMVIT CIRCUIT
  • SOUTH PATTAYA RD TO SUKHUMVIT CIRCUIT
  • SOUTH PATTAYA TO JOMTIEN CIRCUIT

DON’T ASK HOW MUCH?

When it comes to Baht bus’s in Pattaya, the first mistake you can make is ask the driver how much to go somewhere around the Pattaya circuit, it tells him that you are new to the Baht bus scene and don’t know what the price structure is for the fare.

For example – you are at Pattaya Central Festival and you want to go to Walking Street, don’t stop a Baht bus and ask the driver “how much to Walking Street”? Because the driver will give you a quote for 150 baht, believe me they will take advantage of you if they can.

HERE’S WHAT TO DO

Just wait until you see a baht bus coming with passengers in the back already, wave or flag down the driver and when he stops, just scoot around the back and hop in, the driver will continue on his way.

When you want to get off, just press the buzzer that’s usually located above your head on the ceiling, jump out, go to the passenger side window, hand him 10 baht and walk off, that’s it.

If you only have notes, hand him a 20 Baht note and wait for your change unless you are paying for two people, simple.

USING A BAHT BUS AS A TAXI

If you are in a hurry and you want to go somewhere particular as a private fare, then you will have to pay more, somewhere around the 200 baht  – 400 Baht mark, in this circumstance it might be better to take a motor bike taxi.

BEWARE OF PICK POCKETS AND BAG SNATCHERS

A word of warning, be aware of those sitting next to you, it is uncommon but occasionally happens that a pickpocket can sit next to you and will try to steal something from you, also hold onto your bag and purse as bag snatchers have been known to ride up next to a baht bus and reach through the bars to snatch a bag, this is also very uncommon but still happen occasionally, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
