In my opinion, Pattaya is not a safe place and the most dangerous time for tourist in Pattaya is on their first visit, when everything is new and unfamiliar and the hazards you will encounter are still unknown to you.
DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?
Without trying to sound like an alarmist, you’re chances are high for being injured during your holiday in Pattaya, so….
YES, ITS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE TRAVEL INSURANCE when visiting Pattaya and it is also a good idea that you update your will, just in case the worst case scenario befalls you, believe me, lots of tourist die or are killed in accidents every year in Pattaya.
PATTAYA’S BEST KEPT SECRET
It’s one of Pattaya’s best kept secrets and no one wants to talk about the high number of tourist injuries and fatalities, instead, authorities like to talk about improving safety for tourist, but it’s all just talk and nothing ever changes, the carnage continues.
It would be a conservative figure to say at least 10 tourists are hospitalized in Pattaya everyday with serious conditions, some from accidents, some from unexpected health related issues, many more will need first aid of some kind.
Organizing travel insurance with your local travel insurance company before coming to Pattaya is a must, especially if it’s your first visit, one of the annoying things about some travel insurance packages is that they don’t cover you for things like injuries from motor cycle accidents so you need to be aware of things that may affect your claims, motorcycles are one of the biggest causes of serious tourist injuries In Pattaya.
The one thing that you should be aware of about the hospitals in Pattaya is that – they are privately owned and not public, so you will need private healthcare cover from your insurance supplier, the good news is not long ago a new public hospital opened in Pattaya where your generic health insurance may be accepted, the one problem is that you will have to tell your ambulance driver to take you there.

RECIEVING MEDICAL ASSISTANCE IN PATTAYA
Having adequate insurance is a must before coming to Pattaya for the first time, and if you are unfortunate enough to need hospitalization, it won’t be long after arriving at the hospital before administrators ask if you have insurance or how you are going to pay for treatment, and depending on your answer, can dramatically change what happens to you next.
If you don’t have insurance the price of hospital care may be enough to give you a heart attack, well maybe not that extreme, but trust me, it won’t be cheap.
Even without a way to pay for treatment, hospital staff won’t just let you die, but they will do as little as possible to relieve your pain. Most will need some sort of up front, advanced payment for treatment before giving you expensive drugs and treatment, cash or a credit card number will be expected.
The hospitals in Pattaya are very good but can be very expensive, so make sure your travel insurance covers or gives options for emergency flights back to your home country should you need to or want to go.

It’s a sad fact that, as a foreigner in Thailand, if you are involved in an accident and cause damage to a Thai national or their property, you are automatically in the wrong, and will be expected to pay for all costs!
The Thai argument is that – if you, as a tourist, had never come to Thailand, the accident would never had occurred, therefore it’s 100% your fault! That’s the bottom line!
So make sure your insurance policy covers all liabilities including third parties.
Do your homework and find a good insurance policy or update your current insurance package before going overseas, try to be as informed as possible as to what to expect should you actually need to make a claim on that insurance policy and what the process will be on a claim or more importantly after an accident.
Know that your insurer may not be able to reimburse your expense until you are back home several months later and that you will have to pay at the hospital with your cash or credit card, on location, at the hospital, if you need treatment or surgery.
