THE CLOCK TICKS DOWN

Just like previous years, the announcement of the “PATTAYA COUNTDOWN” was made several weeks ago and the preparations for Pattaya’s biggest night of the year where put into motion and the scene set for the hundreds of thousands of people are expected to flood into the city for the celebrations.

COUNTDOWN AT BALI HAI

Every year Bali Hai Pier is home to the “Pattaya Countdown Festival” which is ground zero for the New Year’s celebrations in Pattaya, the site is used mainly as a storage area for local speedboats, but once a year, they get tossed out to make room for Pattaya’s biggest party.

This year’s festival went for three nights with the official opening done by Pattaya dignitaries and honoured guests, then was followed up in party mode with popular Thai bands and ceremonial displays and the occasional pre fireworks test.

AS THE CLOCK STRUCK 12

The final hours before the clock struck midnight saw tens of thousands of people enjoying the spectacle of lights, sound and entertainers who raise the mood to fever pitch as the countdown got closer to zero.

As 2015 ended and 2016 began, the cheers went up “HAPPY NEW YEAR” and the fireworks took over the night sky dazzling everyone with their brilliance and splendour.

THE CROWDS PACK THE BEACH

Those who like things a bit quieter and more relaxed made their way down to Pattaya beach and found a place to sit on a mat while gentle waves rolled up on the sand, the shoreline was nowhere near as packed as in previous years which was good because you had room to move around, still the turnout was in excess of 200,000 people to witness the fireworks set to go off at midnight.

THE LANTERNS LIGHT THE SKY

As the New Year began, spectators were enjoying the fireworks display which lasted for about 5 minutes, but the celebration continued long into the night, the sky over Pattaya was ablaze with colour from explosions and thousands of rice paper lanterns carrying the New Year’s wishes into the night sky.

THE TRAFFIC NIGHTMARE

The downside to Pattaya’s success is the amount of cars and 4×4’s that tries to get into the city as close as possible to the action, Pattaya’s streets and roads were not designed to cope with such large amounts of traffic and has limited parking space, and recent roadwork projects have only worsened vehicle congestion in the last few years making Pattaya roadways a transport nightmare.

This is a time when many people are injured and hurt and getting to medical care such as a doctor or a hospital quickly is impossible, so take care.
