LOTS OF OPTIONS AND PLACES TO BOOK
There are many ways to get to the Suvarmabhumhumi (pronounced- Sou-warn-a-poom) from Pattaya, some are better than other’s and everyone who come here often has their own little system that they use to get the job done, here’s the low down on getting to the airport on time to catch your flight.
GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME
There is one critical factor that everyone who catches a flight successfully, has in common, and that is, they were prepared in advance and gave themselves enough time to make the flight, sounds obvious right, but many people have found themselves at the airport and watching as their plane leaves without them because they simply under estimated how long it takes to go from your room in Pattaya to the boarding gates at the airport.
HOW LONG TO THE AIRPORT?
There are no exact methods of calculating the time it will take you to get from Pattaya to the boarding gates as everything depends on what time of day you go and how many others are heading to the airport at the same time as you are, the airport is about 120 kms from Pattaya and usually takes about 1 ½ hrs to get there.
ON A GOOD DAY
On a good day, there will be no traffic on the road and you will have a speedy 1 hr trip to the airport and when you get to the check in counter you will be the only one there, 5 mins and over to customs for a quick 5 min search, and then maybe, depending on the terminal you are using, a 20 minute walk to the gates, how easy was that!
ON A BAD DAY
On a bad day, you plan to leave 3 ½ hrs before your flight but your minivan is ½ an hour late because he couldn’t find your hotel, and now he has to make a detour because the fuel tank is empty and there’s a big line up at the service station which eats up another 15 mins of your time.
Just when you think you are on your way, he tells you that he has to go to Nakluea for 5 mins to pick up a parcel but takes 10 mins just to get there, now you have the parcel and it takes 10 more minutes to get back to where you were 20 minutes ago.
You are not on the motor way yet and already an hour behind schedule. Soon your cruising down the motorway at 140 km/hr and you breathe a sigh of relief as you feel you are making up the lost time, but it doesn’t last long and the minivan slows to a snail pace behind what looks like a traffic jam in front of you, of course the roadwork’s ahead has bottle nosed the traffic for 2 km’s… and on and on…
THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO ME
You see where I’m going with this, this scenario actually happened to me the first time I missed my flight, by the time I got to the check in counter there was only 35 mins before the flight took off and there was a thousand people in front of me.
I was never going to make the flight. Ok, for me it wasn’t so bad, I went back to Pattaya Immigration and got a 1 month extension that I had up my sleeve, but for those who don’t have that option, well, it can work out to be an expensive and emotional experience.
BE AWARE AND BE PREPARED
The point I’m making here is- prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Give yourself at least 5 hrs between being leaving your hotel or accommodation and the time of your flight, trust me, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Roong Reuang is the main bus service that leaves from Pattaya, and goes directly to the airport and back again, with two bus terminal locations; one near the Nth Pattaya Rd and Sukhumvit Rd intersection and the other is located on Thap Phraya Rd near the ThepPrasit Rd intersection Jomtien. Both offer a basic no frills, air conditioned service that leaves every hr for 134 baht and will take about 1 ½ – 2 hrs.
The Jomtien service does not offer a pickup service and you will have to organize your own transport to the terminal, first bus leaves at 7 am and the last bus leaves at 9 pm.

PRIVATE OR SHARED MINI BUS
24 hrs a day minibuses are ready to take you to the airport which great if your plane is leaving at a time, like, 3:30am, when other transport services have finished. There are many Minibus services around Pattaya and perhaps the easiest way to access one for a trip to the airport is to get your hotel to book one for you or go to a local travel service near your hotel or accommodation, Prices vary, But a shared minibus should cost you no more than 400 baht for a shared minibus and a private minibus between 1000b and 1200b.
BELL TRAVEL SERVICE
Bell transport offers the best deal in town when it comes to getting a minibus to the airport, for only 250 baht they will come and pick you up from your hotel free of charge, ½ hr before the minibus is scheduled to leave to the airport, and bring you to their office where you wait in the air conditioned lounge for your mini bus to leave, the only down side to this deal is that there are only a limited schedule between 6 am and 7 pm, with a 2 hr break between rides. This is my choice as they are very reliable, speak English well, and are very experienced at finding your hotel.

A metered taxi can be organized to pick you up from your hotel for you, to take you to the airport for about 800b and is the happy medium between taking a shared minibus and a private minibus and is good value.
Private limo services are available in Pattaya and a large model of cars to choose from starting a basic small sedan for about 1200b and medium sized sedan or vans for 1500b – 3000b all the way up to the top of the range classic for when you need to make a big impression for about 3500 – 4500b.
The Train leaves from Pattaya train station everyday but is not an effective way to get to the airport and is not recommended.

Just stay away from these guys and don’t even entertain the thought.
No matter what mode of transport you take to the airport, the most important thing is to arrive early and give yourself some extra time for the unexpected.
