I LOVE SONGKRAN

Being a veteran of 7 Songkran festivals in Pattaya, I know more than most what it’s all about, and how to get through it intact. I have seen countless tourists having the time of their lives in Pattaya during Songkran, and occasionally I find a kindred spirit who enjoys this special time as much as I do.

ASK – LOOK – LISTEN

I have seen a lot of cameras during Songkran, some are good, some don’t last a minute, but it’s always good to ask someone in the thick of the action – how their equipment is working, it’s always better to ask people that have been using some item,  if they are are happy with it before you buy one without ever testing it first.

WHAT WAS POPULAR

This year, there were more Go-Pro’s than ever and I saw a lot of Samsung Smart Phones being used, the phones where the big surprise for me because Songkran usually kills more phones in Thailand, than everything else combined, but they seemed to be working fine totally drenched.

Anyway… I have been looking to update my water-proof camera and researching what I might like to upgrade too, so this is my short list of the 10 best cameras for Songkran or the 10 best cameras for Songkran that I could find, hope this helps…

TOP 10 SONGKRAN CAMERAS

NIKON COOLPIX AW 120

This camera consistently comes up as the top pick when researching a camera for Songkran, I would have bought one just from the overwhelming positive reviews it gets, but I could not find one in Pattaya.

PANASONIC LUMIX DMC FT5

Another camera that gets fantastic user reviews, another great all rounder that will handle Songkran with ease.

FUJIFILM FINEPIX XP 70

This is the better version of the Xp 50 and sorts out some of the issues the XP 50 has,  it is one of the best cameras for the money and has a long list of features including WI/FI for easy uploads.

CANON D-30 POWERSHOT

One of the most popular camera’s you will see during Songkran, good value for money and Canon engineering  and reliability, put this one on your short list

CANON D-10 POWERSHOT

One of the older cameras, but still worth a mention because of it’s ability to handle the abuse Songkran will throw at it, Canon came through again when they released this camera and one of my friend uses this camera and says it’s just about indestructible. you can read the review we did on the d-10 camera here –

FUJIFILM FINEPIX XP 50

This is the camera I have used for the last 3 Songkran festivals and will most likely use for a few more, this camera has had some small issues that you an read in our review, but has been nothing less than a workhorse for this website taking 10’s of thousands of photo’s in all conditions. view our Songkran archive and you will see this camera is more than capable of getting through Songkran.

RICHO WG-30W

This camera gets mixed reviews, but what I have seen of some of the underwater shots taken with this camera ere very impressive, but it seems to lack many of the standard features the other cameras have in this class, we give it a big tick for its 16 mp quality photo’s.

OLYMPUS TOUGH TG3

Another great little Songkran camera packed full of features and as the name suggests – it’s tough and takes good daytime snaps, no water is going to get inside this one.

SONY CYBER-SHOT DSC-TX30

This camera is a winner when it come to great photo’s and features, but is let down buy not being as shock-proof as the other camera’s in this class, waterproofing is good just don’t drop it.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 (PHONE)

Usually you have to protect your phone during Songkran, but to see people having conversations while being soaked was interesting to watch, have no fear with these camera phones, they are water proof and the cameras take excellent images as well.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 ACTIVE (PHONE) (MILITARY GRADE)

How can you go past this one, I just bought the Samsung K Zoom instead of this one and worried about it everyday, there are no worries with the S5 Active, it sounds like it could survive anything and walk through Songkran with ease, with Samsung’s quality cameras you know its quality all the way.

GO PRO HERO4 SILVER

Go Pro’s are everywhere these days, and are the most popular camera seen during Songkran, they take excellent photo’s and video’s but are pretty expensive for what you get, and then you have to buy all the accessories which will add up to a small fortune, for me, there is a lot of hype around this camera, that encourages impulse buying, make sure it’s really what you need before shelling out the big bucks.

CONCLUSION

Songkran is my favourite time of the year in Thailand, and Pattayaguide.org has done the best we can do to highlight how much fun Songkran is by posting thousands of photo’s and video’s for you to enjoy.
These are the cameras that I look at to update my Songkran portfolio in the future and all have a good reputations for quality and reliability. We suggest you do your own homework and find what suits you best.
Pattayaguide.org has used the Fuji-film XP 50 for the last 3 Songkran festivals from 2013 – 2015, and have found it to be a great all-round camera for any conditions.
